Summary:
The “Microsoft Word for Windows User’s Reference” describes the key sequence CTRL+SHIFT+F8 as the Column Selection key. When working with text, this key sequence will allow you to select a block of text by using your direction keys. While in Column Selection mode the status bar will display “COL”.
However, if you are working in a table, CTRL+SHIFT+F8 will act like the Extend Selection key instead of the Column Selection key. The Status Bar will display “EXT” in place of “COL”.
Word for Windows Version 2.0
In Word for Windows version 2.0, “EXT” (Extend Indicator) will appear to the right of the view percentage indicator.
