Summary:
The following information outlines the steps for exporting a Computer Graphics metafile from Micrografx Designer version 3.01. Although these steps are likely similar, they may vary from earlier versions of Micrografx Designer.
Steps to Export
Select the symbols to be included in the exported file, or select no symbols to export the entire drawing.
From the File menu, choose the Export command.
Enter a name for the file with no file extension.
Highlight the CGM Computer Graphics Metafile export option, choose the Export command, and press ENTER. Designer automatically adds a file extension, depending on the output format chosen. The CGM file extension assigned matches what is expected by the Word for Windows graphics filter CGMIMP.FLT.
Default WIN.INI setting for the CGM filter:
[WWFilters] CGM Graphics Import=CGMMPORT.FLT,CGM
In the CGM output dialog box that follows, choose Setup, Add CGM Type, and specify the following settings:
Scaling Mode: Abstract Color Specification Mode: Direct Include Color Table: Leave unchecked Coordinate Type: 16-Bit Integer Display Name: Microsoft
Choose OK and press ENTER.
Note: Step 5 need only be performed once. These settings will be retained by Micrografx Designer.
Highlight “Microsoft,” the CGM output type that now appears in the CGM Output field of the CGM Output dialog box, and choose OK to export the file.
In addition, options to select curve quality and scale are provided. Changing these settings is optional, and should not prevent Word for Windows from reading the output CGM file.

According to Micrografx, when adding a CGM file type option as in step 5 above, the following is true:
- The Scaling Mode field allows the choice of Abstract or Metric. Abstract mode has no set page size, while Metric mode defines the size of a page in a CGM file. Word for Windows will support either setting.
- The Color Specification Mode field allows the specification of color values. Direct mode outputs color as specified by Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) color values. Indexed mode specifies colors by numbers in a color table. To include a color table in the CGM file, check the Include Color Table box. The color table sets colors in the input image to approximately the same colors in the output image. Word for Windows will support either setting.
- The Coordinate Type field allows the specification of the type of coordinate system to be used in an output file. 16-bit integer, 36-bit floating or fixed point, and 64-bit floating or fixed point options are provided. Word for Windows, as is the case for most PC programs, will only accept the 16-bit integer coordinate type. The 32 and 64-bit options are included primarily for use by mini and mainframe programs.
- The Curve Quality field in the CGM Output dialog box allows the selection of the degree of curvature for curves in the CGM file. A low Curve Quality setting produces curves with few points, while a high setting produces curves with many points to create smoother curves. As the Curve Quality setting is increased, the resulting file uses more memory and disk space. Word for Windows will read files regardless of the Curve Quality setting (1 to 10).
- The Scale field in the CGM Output dialog box allows the selection of the size of the drawing in the translated file. A setting of 100 produces a default image size, while a lower setting produces a smaller image and a higher setting produces a larger image. Word for Windows supports any setting.
