PSS ID Number: Q70960 Article last modified on 01-24-1995

5.50

MS-DOS

SUMMARY

The following information outlines the steps to manually create a SCREEN.VID video driver file for the IBM Video Graphics Array (VGA) adapter using the MAKEVID.EXE utility.

  1. Copy the following files from the Setup disk to the disk drive and directory path where Word 5.50 is installed:

    DOS or OS/2

    SETUP.EXE WORD55.INF VGA.CS$ VIOVGA.CS$ VGA.GS$

DOS Customers with Memory Resident Programs (TSRs)

    SETUP.EXE WORD55.INF VGA.CS$ VIOVGA.CS$ VGA.GS$ BIOSSAFE.KB$

  2. Copy MAKEVID.EX$ from the Program 3 (5.25-inch) disk or Program 2/ Thesaurus (3.5-inch) disk to the disk drive and directory path where Word 5.50 is installed.

  3. Run SETUP.EXE to decompress the video file components by entering the following commands at the DOS prompt:

    setup /d vga.cs$ setup /d vga.gs$ setup /d viovga.cs$ setup /d biossafe.kb$ (DOS users with memory resident programs only) setup /d makevid.ex$

  4. Run MAKEVID.EXE from the DOS prompt with the following parameters:

    DOS or OS/2

    makevid screen.vid -Lfr vga.csd -Lfp viovga.csd -Lfs vga.gsd

DOS Customers with Memory Resident Programs (TSRs)

    makevid screen.vid -Lfr vga.csd -Lfp viovga.csd -Lfs vga.gsd -Lfr biossafe.kbd

The resulting SCREEN.VID file sizes are as follows:

DOS or OS/2 customers: 15942 bytes DOS customers with safe keyboard option: 18040 bytes

MORE INFORMATION

The VIOVGA.CSD component is not required when running under DOS, but it will automatically be included as part of the SCREEN.VID file when created by SETUP.EXE.

MAKEVID.EXE parameters are as follows:

-Lfr: Precedes any video driver component to be used in real mode (DOS) (all keyboard driver components [.KBD] are preceded by -Lfr)

-Lfp: Precedes any video driver component to be used when running Word in a protected mode session (OS/2 or Windows 386 enhanced mode)

-Lfs: Precedes any video driver component to be used when Word is running in graphics mode
