Installing PowerPoint Version 2.00E on a Network

To install PowerPoint on a network server, follow these steps:

  1. Start Windows 3.0 in standard or enhanced mode on your workstation.
  2. From the Program Manager File menu, choose Run.
  3. In the Command Line field of the Run dialog box, start Setup by typing ‘setup /expand’ referencing the drive where the PowerPoint Setup disk is located. For example, type: a:setup /expand
  4. You will be presented with a choice between installing “with Defaults” and installing “with Options.” To install all the PowerPoint files, select Defaults. To install single items and omit others, choose Options.
  5. When asked where you want to install PowerPoint, specify a valid pathname on the server. For example, type: g:
  6. If you selected Options in step 4, a dialog box containing a list of all the PowerPoint accessories will appear. An “X” in the box to the left of each item indicates that it will be installed. Click to select or cancel the selection of the items. Then click OK to begin the installation of the chosen files. During this step, you also have the option of choosing Bitstream Presentation fonts. To install fonts, you must first specify the model of printer for which you want fonts to be built. You cannot install fonts for multiple printer types during a single setup session. If you have more than one kind of printer you want to build fonts for, you will have to run Setup a separate time for each printer.

After completing steps 1 through 6, you are ready to install the necessary files to a workstation. To complete the installation procedure, make sure that the PowerPoint directory on the server where all the expanded files reside is flagged as Shareable Read-Only by the network. To install the necessary PowerPoint files on a workstation, follow these steps:

  1. Start Microsoft Windows in standard or enhanced mode on the workstation.
  2. From the Program Manager File menu, choose Run.
  3. In the Command Line field of the Run dialog box, start Setup from the network directory where the PowerPoint files have been installed. For example, type: g:/n
  4. A dialog box will appear, asking where you would like the workstation’s files installed. Either accept the default or specify a different directory.

The Setup program will copy the necessary user files to the user’s directory, and generate the icons associated with the programs. NOTE: You cannot run PowerPoint Setup with the /N option from a floppy drive. This procedure for installing a networked version of PowerPoint onto a workstation must be run from the PowerPoint shared directory on the network server.
