PRB: Executing Code Hangs QC If Norton AntiVirus Is Installed PSS ID Number: Q70924 Article last modified on 01-27-1992 PSS database name: S_QuickC

2.00 2.01 2.50 2.51

MS-DOS

Summary:

SYMPTOMS The Microsoft QuickC compiler versions 2.0, 2.01, 2.5, and 2.51 will hang when a device driver called NAV_.SYS is present in the system. This device driver comes with a package called “The Norton AntiVirus”, version 1.0.0.

The problem occurs when you try to run a program from inside the QuickC integrated environment, either by pressing F5 or by choosing Go from the Run menu. Generally, the following error is generated:

  R6000 - stack overflow

QuickC then hangs, leaving the menu bar at the top of the screen.

RESOLUTION The Norton AntiVirus program is loaded from the CONFIG.SYS file with the following statement:

  DEVICE = c:\nav\nav_.sys

The only workaround for this problem is to remove the NAV_.SYS driver and reboot before using QuickC.

STATUS Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in QuickC versions 2.0, 2.01, 2.5, and 2.51. We are researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.
