SUMMARY

The following describes a Microsoft Word printer driver modification for changing a dotted underline to a solid underline on the Epson EX, FX, FXe, LX, MX, LQ, GQ, JX, and SQ series of printers.

The modification to provide a solid underline involves changing bytes 144 and 150 in the PCSD section of the printer driver to appear as follows:

byte:144 mod:4 magic:0 value:0 “^[-1” byte:150 mod:0 “^[-0”

MORE INFORMATION

Epson printers can underline a double strike or NLQ font, but the quality of the underline is not the same as character text.

Word uses Epson graphics mode to create an underline and double underline, which is a thin series of dots, even when using an NLQ font.

These lines of dots are created so that the quality of single and double underlines is the same. For a single underline, an underline mode can be employed that uses the underscore character to achieve a solid line; however, this underline mode is not available for double underline.

The graphics underline produces continuous underlining including the spacing between underlined words. Changing to use the solid underline will not underline the spaces between words. This is a limitation of the printer driver specifications in Word versions 4.00 and 5.00.

These changes must also be made to the printer drivers for Word 5.50.
