Word: New Document Has Paragraph Symbol On First Line

SUMMARY

When beginning a new document in Microsoft Word version 5.00 or 5.50, a paragraph symbol or blank line will display at the top of the screen if the Show Layout feature is on. If a new document is opened when Show Layout is off, the document will start at the top of the page with no paragraph mark or blank line.

If the Show Layout view is on, “LY” will appear on the status line at the bottom of the Word screen.

To toggle Show Layout on or off, do the following:

Word Version 5.00

  1. Press ALT+F4.

-or-

  1. From the Options menu, set the “show layout:” field to No.

Word Version 5.50

  1. From the View menu, select Layout (a mark next to any menu selection indicates that it is on).
