The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh versions 4.0a, 4.0b, 4.0c, 4.0d, 5.0, and 5.1

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, when Space Before Paragraph formatting is applied to the second or later page or column of a document, the left or right paragraph borders may extend above the top margin in print preview and will print above the text.

The above listed versions of Word suppress Space Before paragraph formatting when the paragraph starts a new page or column. However, the paragraph border function does not automatically suppress this space, causing the tip of the borders to not align properly with the text.

To correct this misalignment, you have to manually adjust the text, remove the Space Before formatting from the paragraphs, and reapply the desired border(s).

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word versions 4.0a, 4.0b, 4.0c, 4.0d, 5.0 and 5.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.
