Summary:

WordPerfect includes an option for creating initial settings that allow for default settings (for example, margin settings) for WordPerfect formats that will affect all subsequently created WordPerfect documents. In addition, an option is included for creating initial settings for one particular document. These options are equivalent in purpose to Microsoft Word’s default style sheet, NORMAL.STY, and user-defined style sheet files created for use with specific documents.

Versions of WordPerfect earlier than version 5.1 stored these initial settings and/or document initial codes separate from the actual document file. In WordPerfect 5.1, all such information is included in the document prefix (header) of each created document.

Currently, the WordPerfect 5.0/5.1 converter WP5_RTF.EXE supplied with the Word 5.50 Conversion Utility Kit does not support the conversion of WordPerfect initial settings or document initial codes. Steps for creating a workaround to simulate these settings in Microsoft Word are as follows:

  1. Create a Microsoft Word style sheet containing margin settings, paragraph formats, etc. that replicate those defined in WordPerfect’s initial settings.
  2. Convert the document from WordPerfect to Rich Text Format (RTF).
  3. In Word, from the File menu, choose Open (Word 5.50) or choose Transfer Load (Word 5.00) and enter the name of the RTF file.
  4. From the Format menu, choose Attach Style Sheet (Word 5.50) or choose Format Stylesheet Attach (Word 5.00) to attach the style sheet created in step 1 above.
  5. Highlight the document and press CTRL+X (Word 5.50) or ALT+X,P (Word 5.00) to remove all direct paragraph formatting read in from the converted WordPerfect file. Also, if the Word for DOS division standard style does not take effect, remove division breaks to eliminate the overriding direct division formatting. The margin settings from the style sheet will now be applied to the document.

To retain these Word for DOS settings, save the file before exiting Word.

Note: The above steps can be automated for frequent use by creating a Word macro.
