Summary: When you use an expression field to sum a table column in Word for Windows 1.0 and 2.0, the syntax that refers to the column will vary, depending on the placement of the field.
More Information: You can place the expression field in the column you are summing, in a different column, or outside the table. The syntax for the column reference will differ depending on the placement. The following examples illustrate the differences: 1. When the expression field is in the same column that is being summed, you must put the range of cells in the field: {=sum ([RxCx:RxCx])} 2. When the expression field is in a column other than the one being summed, you may refer only to the column number: {=sum ([Cx])} (you may also use method one) 3. When the expression field is outside the table, you must select the table and insert a bookmark: {=sum (T1[Cx])} or {=sum (T1[RxCx:RxCx])} “T1” is the bookmark name.
