The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c

Summary:

Typing Word for Windows using an italic font produces unnecessary gaps between characters on the screen.

More Information:

The italic screen font may display gaps between characters; however, the problem does not exist in the printout. To demonstrate, type a few lines of text in a Word for Windows document using italic Times Roman 14 point. Print the document and notice that although gaps appear on the screen between characters, the gaps don’t print out.

Note: If you have revision marks on that are underlining new text, it may accentuate the problem.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows versions 1.00 and 1.10. We are researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.
