The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c

Summary:

Text in a paragraph with a negative indent that appears below an absolute positioned object (APO) in Word for Windows will not be completely displayed in page view.

More Information:

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Open a new document using the default template NORMAL.DOT.

  2. From the Format menu, choose Document, type 3.25" for the Left Margin and choose OK.

  3. Type “The heading.” and press ENTER.

  4. Type “Text, part I.” and press ENTER.

  5. Type “Text, part II.” and press ENTER.

  6. Select the first paragraph and choose Position from the Format menu and do the following:

    1. In the Horizontal box, type 1.25".
    2. Select Relative to Page.
    3. Leave the Vertical options at Inline Relative to Margin.
    4. Type the Paragraph Width option 1.75".
    5. Choose OK.
  7. Select the third paragraph and choose Paragraph from the Format menu. Type -2" in the Indents From Left option and choose OK.

Notice that “Text, part II.” is not visible. If you move the cursor below “Text, part I.”, where the third line should be, and start typing, eventually the characters being typed will begin to appear. But the left 1.75" of the text will not be visible. Everything will appear correctly in print preview and also print correctly. The problem just appears in page view.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows versions 1.0, 1.1, and 1.1a. This problem was corrected in Word for Windows version 2.0. New or updated Microsoft products can be obtained from Microsoft Sales Information Center at (800) 426-9400. If calling from outside the United States, contact Microsoft International Customer Service at (206) 936-8661.
