The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft MS-DOS operating system versions 4.00 and 4.01

Question:

I have a VGA monitor capable of 43 and 50 line mode. When I type:

mode con:lines=50

I receive the message “Function not supported on this computer.”

Response:

The Mode command utilizes the ANSI.SYS device driver when changing video modes. Before ANSI.SYS changes to 43 or 50 line mode, it inspects the current video mode. If ANSI.SYS does not recognize the current video mode as a standard VGA mode, this error message is displayed.

If the video card can be set into a standard VGA mode, the Mode command to change to 43 or 50 line mode will be successful.

ANSI.SYS checks the current video mode before changing to 43 or 50 line mode to prevent possible video conflicts. If the video card were in a non-standard VGA mode before changing to 43 or 50 line mode, it could leave the video in a unknown state.
