SUMMARY

When you clear all the tabs from multiple paragraphs with the Clear All button in Microsoft Word version 5.5, at least one tab setting must be common to all the paragraphs. If all the selected paragraphs have at least one tab in common, the Clear All button will be available in the Tabs dialog box. If the selected paragraphs do not have at least one tab in common, the Clear All command will be unavailable in the Tabs dialog box.

MORE INFORMATION

If the paragraphs do not share a common tab, each paragraph should be selected individually before choosing Tabs from the Format menu and choosing the Clear All button. Another method is to select all of the paragraphs and set a tab. After you set a common tab, you can clear all the tabs in the selected paragraphs with the Clear All button.

Another option is to select all the paragraphs and press CTRL+X. This command removes paragraph formatting and clears all tabs. If you use this method, remember that ALL paragraph formatting (including indents, line spacing, and so forth) will be removed.

The “Using Microsoft Word” version 5.5 manual does not state that paragraphs must share common tabs before you can use the Clear All button; however, the manual does say that only the common tabs display on the ruler when more than one paragraph is selected.

A common tab is not required in Word 5.0 to clear all the tabs in multiple paragraphs.
