SYMPTOMS

The Outline Number feature in Microsoft Project is disabled when the Name field is the first field in a table and the first field is locked.

WORKAROUND

To create a table that displays outline numbers when the Name field is in the first column, clear the Lock First Column check box (in 4.0 this check box is located on the View tab in the Options dialog box).

STATUS

This behavior is by design of Microsoft Project.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

Microsoft Project 4.0:

  1. Open a Microsoft Project (.MPP) file.
  2. From the Tools menu, choose Options, and select the View tab.
  3. On the View tab, under Outline options, select the Show Outline Number check box.
  4. Outline numbers should appear next to the names of your project tasks.
  5. From the View menu, choose Table, and then choose More Tables. In the More Tables dialog box, choose New.
  6. In the Table Definition dialog box, in the Name box, type “Test” (without the quotation marks).
  7. Position the insertion point in the Field Name column and type the field you want displayed in the table column, or click the arrow at the right end of the entry bar. Select a field name from the list. Select the Lock First Column check box, and choose OK.
  8. From the View menu, choose Gantt Chart.
  9. From the View menu, choose Table, and then choose More Tables. Choose the Apply button.

The table will be displayed without outline numbers.

Microsoft Project versions 3.0a and earlier:

  1. Open a Microsoft Project (.MPP) file.
  2. From the Format menu, choose Outline.
  3. Select the Outline Number option, and choose OK.
  4. From the Table menu, choose Define Tables.
  5. Select New and give the table a name. Define the new table so that at least two fields are included with the Name field being the first field.
  6. Select Lock First Column, and choose OK.
  7. Choose Set.
  8. From the View menu, choose Gantt Chart or Task Entry.
  9. Select Table and select the new table from the list

The table will be displayed without outline numbers.
