The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh versions 3.0, 3.01, 3.02, and 4.0

SUMMARY

In versions 3.x and 4.0 of Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, when Word cannot locate the specified data document during a print merge, it produces a dialog box with the error message “Please locate <filename>” (where “filename” is the name of the data document you specified in your main document). In the dialog box, all folders will be visible, but the only file displayed will be the document that matches the name you specified in your DATA statement.

This error message could be caused by one of the following:

  • The filename you specified in your DATA statement does not exactly match the actual name of the file.

-or-

  • The data document has been moved or is no longer present on the hard drive.

Note: In Word version 5.0, when the error message “Please locate file <filename>” appears, other files can be chosen.

For more information about print merges with Word 4.0, see page 296 in the “Reference to Microsoft Word.” If you are using Word 3.x, see page 64, “Form Letters,” and page 187, “Mailing Labels,” in the “Reference to Microsoft Word.”
