PRJ: Sorting Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) Codes |
Q64236
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Project for Windows, versions 1.0, 3.0, 3.0a, 4.0
- Microsoft Project for the Macintosh, versions 1.1, 3.0, 4.0
SUMMARY
When sorting Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) codes in Microsoft Project, the sort order is determined by alphanumeric precedence. For example, the following results would occur after sorting:
Before Sorting After Sorting/Project After Sorting/Excel -------------- --------------------- ------------------- Name: WBS: Name: WBS: Name: WBS: Task 1 1 Task 1 1 Task 1 1 Task 2 2 Task 3 10 Task 2 2 Task 3 10 Task 2 2 Task 3 10 Task 4 abc Task 5 ab Task 5 ab Task 5 ab Task 4 abc Task 4 abc
Project is sorting character strings and not numeric values. By doing this, the character string "10" gets sorted before the character string "2". Microsoft Excel will sort this way if you input the numbers as text.
