SUMMARY
To easily set up special layouts (for example, different margins and orientation) for the first pages of a Microsoft Word document, such as the table of contents, the title page, the preface, the copyright, the dedication, etc., put these pages in a separate file that is linked to the main body of the manuscript or to the linked series of the main manuscript.
For example, to create a table of contents in a document by itself, do the following:
- Create a new, blank document.
- From the Format menu, choose Document, click Next File, and open the main body of the manuscript or the first file in the linked series of the main manuscript.
- Generate the table of contents (TOC) by choosing Table Of Contents from the Utilities menu. Under Collect, select either Outline or .C. Paragraphs.
Word places the table of contents in the new file. You can then put the other elements, such as the copyright page, the title page, and the acknowledgments, in the same file as the table of contents.
