MS-DOS

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft MS-DOS operating system versions 3.20 and 3.21

Summary:

The MS-DOS version 3.2 RESTORE command may not always restore files backed up with the version 3.2 BACKUP command.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in MS-DOS version 3.2. This problem does not occur in later versions of MS-DOS.

More Information:

For situations where the version 3.2 BACKUP command is used and the version 3.2 RESTORE command does not restore the files, a utility is available that allows you to manually restore backup files. This utility, SREST.EXE, is public-domain software written by a third party. It has been tested and works well with MS-DOS versions 3.2 and 3.21.

SREST.EXE is available in an application note titled “MS-DOS BACKUP/RESTORE Supplemental Utilities,” PD0315. Application notes can be obtained by calling Microsoft Product Support Services.

Note: SREST.EXE will not work correctly with backup files created by MS-DOS version 3.3, 3.3a, 4.0, 4.01, 4.01a, or 5.0 because the file structure for the backup disks is different. The utility NREST.EXE, also included in this application note, will restore the versions 3.3 and later backup files.

The products included here, SREST.EXE and NREST.EXE, are manufactured by vendors independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding these products’ performance or reliability.
