Prompt String “$v” Adds Extra Spaces PSS ID Number: Q60213 Article last modified on 07-14-1993 PSS database name: O_MSDOS

3.30 3.30a

MS-DOS

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft MS-DOS operating system versions 3.30 and 3.30a

Summary:

The “Microsoft MS-DOS Version 3.30 User’s Guide” states on Page 101 that the “$v” sequence can be placed in a PROMPT string to display the current MS-DOS version information in the MS-DOS prompt. However, extra spaces are added after the MS-DOS version name, causing any text on the same line after the version information to be moved to the right by 21 spaces.

The prompt command of “PROMPT <math display="inline">V</math>G” produces the following

MS-DOS Version 3.30 >

instead of the following expected output:

MS-DOS Version 3.30>

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with MS-DOS versions 3.30 and 3.30a. This problem does not occur in later versions of MS-DOS.
