SUMMARY

The Word for Windows error message

“Cannot create work file”

occurs if Word cannot create a temporary work file for storing editing changes.

This error can occur for the following reasons:

  1. A “SET TEMP=” variable has not been set. Add the command "SET TEMP=C:" to the AUTOEXEC.BAT on the hard disk.
  2. The disk temporary files are written to (where SET TEMP= is set to) is full. Remove unnecessary files to free up hard disk space.
  3. If running on a network, verify that the network drive you write temporary files to is connected and that you have write privileges.
