- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 4.0

SUMMARY

When a Quickswitch has been done in a Word document with Paste Link, the error message “The application identifier should be 4 characters and end in !” indicates that Word version 4.00 cannot recognize the name of the source application in the identifier paragraph.

The source application name must be either Excel or SuperPaint or a four-character application signature, and it must be followed by an exclamation point. The four-character application signature is used by the Finder to identify an application.

To see the application signature, a utility program such as Fedit or ResEdit may be used.
