The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for Windows versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c

Summary:

To insert a nonbreaking space in Word for Windows, press CTRL+SHIFT+SPACEBAR. A nonbreaking space does not break at the end of a line. For example, if you have a nonbreaking space between an area code and a telephone number (such as [206] 454-2030) that will not fit at the end of a line, the area code and the telephone number together will word wrap to the next line (the hyphen would have to be a nonbreaking hyphen entered with CTRL+SHIFT+HYPHEN).

To see nonbreaking spaces in a Word 2.x document, choose Options from the Tools menu. Select the View category and click in the Spaces box and choose the OK button.

To see nonbreaking spaces in a Word 1.x document, place a check in the Spaces box in the View Preferences dialog box.

The nonbreaking space is displayed as a degree symbol (ANSI character 176). A normal space is displayed as a small dot.

For more information on nonbreaking spaces and their uses, see pages 35 and 177 of the “Microsoft Word for Windows User’s Reference.”
