Summary:

Page 179 of the “Microsoft Excel Functions and Macros” version 2.2 manual incorrectly states that topic numbers “can be any integer from 0 to 32767, inclusive.”

The correct statement is the following:

The topic_number can be any integer from 1 to 32767, inclusive.

More Information:

When you create a custom Help file with the first topic number as 0 (zero), the following occurs:

  1. The topic does not appear in the Help window.

  2. With the empty Help window showing, any of the following can cause Excel to quit unexpectedly:

    1. Clicking the scroll bar
    2. Zooming the Help window
    3. Resizing the Help window
  3. When viewing the Help topic that follows the 0 (zero) Help topic (usually Help Topic 1), the Previous button is grayed in the Help window.
