Word 5.00: Text Doesn’t Wrap Around Graphic on HP DeskJet

SUMMARY

In Word Version 5.00, only font sizes 8, 10, and 12 in Times Roman and Helvetica will correctly print next to graphics on the HP DeskJet and DeskJet Plus printers. Other sizes break in half and the top of the character overprints the bottom.

Due to the method the DeskJet uses to implement Hewlett-Packard’s Printer Control Language (PCL), Word cannot print text larger or smaller than 8, 10, or 12 points on the same line as graphics.

The internal Courier 16-point font can be used because it is no taller than the standard 12-point Courier and does not cause the head-positioning error.

If the 8-, 10-, and 12-point fonts do not correctly print, check that the printer’s “Text Scale Mode” switch is turned off (down). If this switch is turned on, as HP recommends for Word Version 4.00, Word 5.00 cannot wrap the text correctly.
