MS-DOS

SUMMARY

The running head will be formatted for edge-of-paper alignment rather than the default of left-margin alignment when you do the following:

Word Version 5.00

  1. Set the Options “show layout:” field to Yes. Note that running heads do not appear on the screen in this mode.
  2. Insert a paragraph with some text and format the paragraph as a running-head. In the Format Running-head “alignment:” field, select Left-margin.
  3. Set the Options “show layout:” field to No.
  4. When you return to the Format Running-head “alignment:” field, it’s set to edge-of-paper.

Microsoft has confirmed this in version 5.00. To handle this, simply reset the “alignment:” field to Left-margin.

Word Version 5.50

In Microsoft Word 5.50, it is not possible to format a header or footer while in layout view. The error message “Word cannot format a header or footer in layout view.” will appear in the message bar at the bottom of the screen.

If you press the F1 key while this message is displayed, Word will display a help screen that will provide instructions about how to switch out of layout view and format the header or footer.
