The following are possible causes and cures for the Word 5.00 error message “Cannot Rename File.” Word 5.50 error message: “Do you want to overwrite the existing file?”

  1. There is already a file with that name. Choose another name for the document. Word 5.50 error message: “The filename or path is not valid.”
  2. The filename is not a legal name. Choose another name for the document. Word 5.50 error message: “There was a problem writing to a disk or device.”
  3. The disk is write-protected. Remove the write-protect tab from the disk.
