SYMPTOMS

If you install MSN, the Microsoft Network, Messenger version 5.0, you cannot see the status of your MSN buddies in Outlook 2002.

CAUSE

The MSN Messenger 5.0 client uses a new method for controlling what programs can access the client. MSN Messenger 5.0 uses a lock and key method where programs, such as Outlook 2002, must have specific access to the client. If you have Outlook 2002 installed with the latest service pack, Outlook 2002 cannot access the MSN Messenger 5.0 client to determine the status of MSN buddies.

WORKAROUND

If you must see the status of your MSN buddies in Outlook 2002, follow these steps to remove MSN Messenger 5.0, and install an earlier version of the MSN Messenger to work around this behavior.

How to remove MSN Messenger 5.0

Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, use the appropriate steps for your version of Windows.

Microsoft Windows XP:

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In the list of currently installed programs, click MSN Messenger 5.0, and then click Remove.
  4. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the removal.
  5. Close the Add or Remove Programs window.

Microsoft Windows 2000:

  1. Click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In the list of currently installed programs, click MSN Messenger 5.0, and then click Remove.
  4. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the removal.
  5. Close the Add or Remove Programs window.

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0:

  1. Click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click MSN Messenger 5.0, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the removal.
  5. Close the Add or Remove Programs window.
