SYMPTOMS

When you try to upgrade your computer from any of the following operating systems to Windows XP, the Windows XP Upgrade Advisor may report a blocking issue with SecuRemote that prevents the upgrade:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 98

You may continue to experience this behavior after you use the Add/Remove Programs tool to remove SecuRemote from your computer.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if either of the following conditions exist:

  • The Check Point Software Technologies "SecuRemote" Virtual Private Networking (VPN) client software is installed on your computer.
  • You removed the SecuRemote program from your computer, but one or more copies of the SecuRemote Fwenc.exe file remain on your hard disk.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:

  1. If you have already used the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel to remove SecuRemote from your computer, do not complete the rest of step 1, and go to step 2. If you have not already used the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel to remove SecuRemote from your computer:
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    3. In the list of currently installed programs, click the entry for the SecuRemote program, and then click Add/Remove.
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to remove SecuRemote from your computer.
  2. Make sure that the Fwenc.exe file no longer remains on your hard disk:
    1. NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files and Folders.
    2. In the Search for files or folders named box, type fwenc.exe, and then click Search Now.
    3. Delete each Fwenc.exe file that is found.
  3. Run Windows XP Setup.
