SYMPTOMS

When you try to start your computer, you may receive the following error message:

Stop 0x0000007B INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you have installed the Iomega IomegaWare version 3.1 program.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order that they are presented.

Method 1

Part 1: Restore the System with the Recovery Console

  1. Start your computer by using your Windows 2000 CD as the boot disk.


NOTE: You may have to change the disk that your computer boots from in your Basic Input Output System (BIOS) settings. See the documentation that came with your computer for information about your BIOS.

  1. When you are prompted to do so, press R to select Repair, and then press C to select Recovery Console.
  2. Type cd windows\system32\config, and then press ENTER to change folders.
  3. Type ren system system.old, and then press ENTER.
  4. Type copy windows\repair\system, and then press ENTER.
  5. Type exit, and then press ENTER.
  6. Start your computer normally, do not boot from the Windows CD.
  7. If you cannot start your computer normally, go to Method 2. If you can start your computer normally, go to Part 2 of this method.

Part 2: Edit the Registry

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedt32, and then click OK.
  2. Click the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

  3. On the File menu, click Load Hive, and then load the Windows\System32\Config\System.old hive.
  4. When you are prompted to specify a name, type Test.
  5. Locate, and then click the following keys, where <xxx> represents numbers such as 001, 002, and others:

    ControlSet<xxx>\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    ControlSet<xxx>\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

  6. Delete the LOWERFILTERS entry for each of the keys in step 5.
  7. Under ControlSet<xxx>\Services, change the start value of iomdisk, Iomega Activity Disk2, IomegaAccess and ZipToA to 4 (disabled).
  8. On the File menu, click Unload Hive, and then unload the Windows\System32\Config\System.old hive.
  9. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

Part 3: Restore System

  1. Start your computer by using your Windows 2000 CD as the boot disk.


NOTE: You may have to change the disk your computer boots from in your BIOS settings. See the documentation that came with your computer for information about your BIOS.

  1. When you are prompted to do so, press R to select Repair, and then press C to select Recovery Console.
  2. Type cd windows\system32\config, and then press ENTER to change folders.
  3. Type ren system system.xxx, and then press ENTER.
  4. Type ren system.old system, and then press ENTER.
  5. Type exit, and then press ENTER.

Part 4: Remove IomegaWare

Start your computer normally (do not boot from the Windows CD), and then remove the IomegaWare program.

Method 2

If you cannot start your computer normally after you follow Method 1, steps 1-7, follow these steps.

Part 1: Undo System Restore

  1. Start your computer by using your Windows 2000 CD as the boot disk.


NOTE: You may have to change the disk your computer boots from in your BIOS settings. See the documentation that came with your computer for information about your BIOS.

  1. When you are prompted to do so, press R to select Repair, and then press C to select Recovery Console.
  2. Type cd windows\system32\config, and then press ENTER to change folders.
  3. Type ren system system.xxx, and then press ENTER.
  4. Type ren system.old system, and then press ENTER.

Part 2: Copy Drivers

  1. Type cd windows\system32\drivers, and then press ENTER.
  2. Type ren IomDisk.sys IomDisk.old, and then press ENTER.
  3. Type copy atapi.sys iomDisk.sys, and then press ENTER.

Part 3: Disable Iomega Services

  1. Type listsvc, and then locate the following Iomega services:
    • iomdisk
    • Iomega Activity Disk2
    • IomegaAccess
    • ZipToA
  2. Type disable Service_Name to disable each of these services.

Part 4: Perform an In-Place Windows Upgrade

Perform an in-place upgrade of Windows 2000, and then remove IomegaWare by using the Add or Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
