SYMPTOMS
When you use Exchange System Manager to rebuild the offline address list on an Exchange 2000 server, the following error message may be logged in the Application event log:
CAUSE
This is a generic error message with a number of possible causes. This error message may be logged if:
- A system policy is not pointing to a valid information store database. -or-
- The mailbox store has a default public store on another Exchange 2000 server. -or-
- The SystemMailbox object is missing from the mailbox store.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue:
- Check the system policies. This error message may be logged if a system policy points to a store object that no longer exists (for example, if the information store was removed or deleted). If you try to view the default public information store, it may also be unavailable and unviewable. Remove or reconfigure system policies in Exchange System Manager to make sure that the system policies point to valid information stores.
- If system policies are configured properly and point to valid information store databases, check the mailbox store for the default public information store configuration and to make sure that the SystemMailbox object is present. Make sure that the mailbox store has the public store on that server selected as the mailbox store's default public store, and not another public store on another server.
- Make sure that the mailbox store has a SystemMailbox object in Microsoft Exchange System Objects. Without a SystemMailbox object, the offline address list may not be generated. To re-create the SystemMailbox object, you may have to move the contents on the existing mailbox store to another store, delete the original store, and then re-create it. This creates a new SystemMailbox object in Exchange System Objects.
If you are using the Standard version of Exchange 2000, you may have to use Exmerge to move the data to personal folder (.pst) files, delete the mailbox store, and then create a new mailbox store.
