SYMPTOMS

When you open a Word document, extra characters may have been added to your document. These characters may include symbols, squares, and other unexpected characters.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if an open Word document is disconnected from its dependent temporary files. For example, this might occur when the Word document temporary files are located on a network share and you experience a server timeout, or slow network performance.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, save the document to your computer before you make any changes. Edit the document, save it locally, and then copy the revised document back to the original location.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue in Word 2002, configure Word to automatically make a local copy of files that are stored on network or removable drives:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Save tab.
  2. Click to select the Make local copy of files stored on network or removable drives check box, and then click OK.
