Then, the installation process quits, and a message similar to the following may appear in the SP1 installation log:

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the Licdll.dll or Regwizc.dll files are unregistered. Microsoft has confirmed that the XP-AntiSpy program unregisters these Windows files and causes this problem. XP-AntiSpy is a freeware program that can disable features in Windows XP, including the Automatic Updates feature. If you use the XP-AntiSpy program to disable Windows XP features, you may not be able to install Windows XP SP1.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regsvr32.exe licdll.dll, and then click OK.
  3. You should receive the following message:

    DllRegisterServer in licdll.dll succeeded.

  4. Click OK.
  5. Click Start, and then click Run.
  6. In the Open box, type regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll, and then click OK.
  7. You should receive the following message:

    DllRegisterServer in regwizc.dll succeeded.

  8. Click OK, and then continue with the installation of SP1.

NOTE: You can safely use this procedure to resolve this issue even if XP-AntiSpy is not installed on your computer.
