SYMPTOMS

After you install either the hotfixes or the Systems Management Server (SMS) Hotfix Rollup Package (HRP) that are described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles, client computers that are running either Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98 may no longer receive advertisements:

Q316868 SMS: Advertisements Do Not Start When a User Logs On

Q321168 SMS: Advertisements for a User or User Group Can Run Again

323206 SMS: List of Bugs Fixed in the Systems Management Server 2.0 Service Pack 4 Hotfix Rollup Package

This problem only affects SMS clients that use the Novell Client for Netware and do not have the Client for Microsoft Networks installed.

You may receive the following message in the Odpwnt9x.log file:

ACCOUNT MGR : No Microsoft Network Provider
IPC ODP : No Windows Networking logon detected
IPC ODP : OPD failed to initialise properly. Calling SendODPDone.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Offer Data Provider (ODP) SMS client component does not detect the Novell Client for Netware. The ODP SMS client does not initialize and connect to a Client Access Point (CAP) to receive advertisements.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Systems Management Server service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

NOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The typical support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.
