SYMPTOMS

When you try to rename a folder on an NTFS file system partition in Microsoft Windows XP, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:

Cannot rename foldername: Access is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if files in the folder or in a sub-folder are currently being used.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.
