This article was previously published under Q329058

SYMPTOMS

After you install the Service Pack 4 Hotfix Rollup Package (HRP) on a computer on which the SMS Administrator tools are installed, you receive the following error message if you try to use the Systems Management Server (SMS) Service Manager tool to manage SMS site servers:

Error communicating with the specified SMS site server.

CAUSE

The Compmgr.exe file (the SMS Service Manager program file) that is included with the HRP is not copied to computers that run the SMS Administrator tools. The file is copied to SMS site servers when you install the HRP on site servers. The Compmgr.exe file must be installed to prevent the problem that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

306521 SMS: SMS Service Manager May Not Connect

WORKAROUND

Locate the Compmgr.exe file in the Bin\Platform folder of the expanded HRP installation. Copy the HRP version of the Compmgr.exe file to the Bin\Platform folder under the SMS Administrator tools installation path on the computer on which the SMS Administrator tools are installed.
