SYMPTOMS
An optional Systems Management Server (SMS) client component installation or upgrade may not be completed successfully if Client Configuration Installation Manager (CCIM) is cycled before Available Programs Manager (APM) starts its installation program. The following Smsapm32.log log entries are typically recorded if you experience this problem. Note that the component that does not run may vary, and may not be Swdist32.exe.

How to Install the Hotfix
Using the Hotfix Installer
Note This method is only for Intel-based computers.
- Create a folder in a location that is accessible to your SMS site servers.
- Copy the update file (Q328599.exe) and platform folders to the new folder. The folder structure must be arranged so that the update file is located one folder "above" the platform folders.
- From each of the primary and secondary SMS site servers in your environment, log on to your site server by using an account with administrative credentials.
- Quit the SMS Administrator console if it is running.
- Run Q328599.exe, and then follow the instructions in the wizard.
Manual Installation
- Create a folder in a location that is accessible to your SMS site servers.
- Copy the platform folders that contain the hotfix files to the folder that you created.
- From each of the primary and secondary SMS site servers in your environment, log on to your site server by using an account with administrative credentials.
- Quit the SMS Administrator console if it is running.
- Stop all SMS services.
- Replace the Ccim32.dll, Clisvcl.exe, Cqmgr32.dll, Odpsys32.exe, Odpusr32.exe, and Smsapm32.exe files in the
SmsRootFolder
\Bin\Platform
folder with the versions from the hotfix. - Replace the Swdist32.exe file in the
SmsRootFolder
\Inboxes\Clicomp.src\SWDist\Platform
folder with the version from the hotfix. - Replace the Apasetup.exe file in the
SmsRootFolder
\Inboxes\Clicomp.src\Smsapm32\Platform
folder with the version from the hotfix. - Replace the Ccmcore.exe and Clicore.exe files in the
SmsRootFolder
\Inboxes\Clicomp.src\Base\Platform
folder with the versions from the hotfix. - Replace the Compver.ini file in the
SmsRootFolder
\Inboxes\Clicomp.src\SWDist folder with the Compverswdist.ini file from the hotfix. Note that you must rename the Compverswdist.ini file to Compver.ini. - Replace the Compver.ini file in the
SmsRootFolder
\Inboxes\Clicomp.src\Smsapm32 folder with the Compversmsapm32.ini file from the hotfix. Note that you must rename the Compversmsapm32.ini file to Compver.ini. - Replace the Compver.ini file in the
SmsRootFolder
\Inboxes\Clicomp.src\Base folder with the Compverbase.ini file from the hotfix. Note that you must rename the Compverbase.ini file to Compver.ini. - Restart the SMS Services
WORKAROUND
Do not cycle CCIM manually (by using the Update Configuration button in the Systems Management tool in Control Panel, or by using Setevnt.exe) while optional components are being installed.
If an SMS client component installation or upgrade has already not completed successfully because of the issue that is described in this article, note that CCIM causes APM to retry the component installation within 60 minutes. The installation or upgrade should succeed during the next CCIM retry cycle. If you cannot wait for CCIM to retry the operation, either restart the "SMS Client Service" service, or start CCIM again by running the Setevnt.exe utility from the SMS Support Tools.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0 Service Pack 5.
