SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Office XP on a Windows Millennium Edition-based computer, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

Error 25504 Failed to set feature FeatureName to the install state of feature FeatureName for mode Mode.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the registry contains incorrect or corrupted information.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, run Windows Registry Checker (Scanreg.exe). Registry Checker scans the registry for entries that are not valid, and then if it detects any, repairs the damage or restores the registry from a backup if the damage cannot be repaired. To run Windows Registry Checker, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Registry Checker.

You may receive the following error message:

Windows encountered an error accessing the system registry. Windows will restart the computer and repair the system registry for you.

If you receive this error message, click OK to restart your computer, and then go to step 3.

If you do not receive this error message, go to step 3.
  3. Close all programs.
  4. Click Start, click Run, type scanreg /fix in the Open box, and then click OK.
  5. Click Yes to restart your computer.
  6. Install Office XP.
