SYMPTOMS

When you try to install the Microsoft Word 2000 Security Update: Macro Vulnerability on your computer, you may receive a message that the installer cannot find the Data1pro.msi or the Data1.msi file. If you provide the Microsoft Office 2000 CD-ROM, the installation completes successfully. The installation log file in the Windows drive:\Temp\OfficeHotfix folder may contain an entry that is similar to the following entry:

Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Professional. The Windows installer cannot continue.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Word 2000 Security Update: Macro Vulnerability requires the Office 2000 source files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, provide the Office 2000 CD-ROM when you install the security update on your computer.

MORE INFORMATION

You can use an administrative installation point if you are installing the security update on a large number of computers. An administrative installation point is a centralized copy of the Office 2000 Setup files. You can use an administrative installation point for a standardized installation of workstations and to simplify the application of patches to many computers.

Create an Office Administrative Installation Point

To create an Office administrative installation point on network server:

NOTE: You cannot use Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) versions of Office 2000 to create administrative installation points.

For additional information about this limit, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  1. On the network server, create a shared folder to contain the Office 2000 files.

NOTE: The shared folder must be located on a hard disk with at least 550 megabytes (MB) of available disk space.

  1. Log on to a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows NT, or Microsoft Windows 2000 as a user with write access to the shared folder, and then connect to the shared folder. To do so, click Start, click Run, type the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path to the server, and then click OK. For example, type \\ServerName\ShareName, where ServerName is the administrative installation point server, and ShareName is the installation point shared folder name.
  2. Put the Office 2000 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
  3. Click Start, click Run, type CD-ROM drive:\setup.exe /a data1.msi, and then click OK.
  4. Type the product key, and then press ENTER.
  5. Type the name of your corporation in the Company box, and then press ENTER.

NOTE: The name of your corporation appears in the startup screens that appear to users when they open Office programs.

  1. In the License and Support Information dialog box, click to accept the license agreement, and then press ENTER.
  2. In the Installation Location dialog box, type the UNC path you used in step 2, and then click Install Now.

Setup then copies the Office 2000 files from the CD-ROM to the network server. Setup also modifies the Windows Installer package for Office (Data1.msi) to identify the network share as an administrative installation point.

Update the Administrative Installation Point With the Microsoft Word 2000 Security Update: Macro Vulnerability

After you create the administrative installation point for Office 2000, you can add the Office 2000 updates. To obtain the administrative version of the Microsoft Word 2000 Security Update: Macro Vulnerability, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

To obtain the administrative versions of other Office update files, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

To apply the Microsoft Word 2000 Security Update: Macro Vulnerability to an administrative installation point:

NOTE: You must update your Office 2000 administrative point to the SR-1 level before you apply the update.

  1. Download the update.
  2. Connect a network drive to the administrative installation point. For additional information about how to connect a network drive, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

308582 How to connect and disconnect a network drive in Windows XP

NOTE: You must have the appropriate permissions to the administrative installation point on the server.
  3. Click Start, click Run, type msiexec /p PathToUpdateFile:\Wd2kmsec.exe /a NetworkDriveAndPath:\MSIFileName SHORTFILENAMES=TRUE /qb /L*v c:\LogFileName.txt, and then click OK. PathToUpdateFile is the location of the update file on your hard disk, NetworkDriveAndPath is the network drive and path to the administrative installation point, and LogFileName.txt is the name of the log file to be created.NOTE: The /L*v c:\LogFileName.txt command turns on verbose logging to create a detailed log file during the installation.

For additional information about command-line options for the Windows Installer Tool, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the security update.

Any new client installations from the administrative installation point will automatically include the updated version of Microsoft Word. However, network clients are not automatically updated when you update the administrative installation. After you update the administrative installation point, you must also update your network client computers.

Update Computers From the Administrative Installation Point

To update an existing client installation from an administrative installation point:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type msiexec /i PathToUpdatedMSIFile REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=VOMUS /q, where PathToUpdatedMSIFile is the path to the updated installer file on the network server.
  2. Click OK.
