SYMPTOMS
When you try to use a program that requires a network connection on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, the program may stop responding, and you may receive a user-mode failure error message that mentions the Dnsapi.dll file.
CAUSE
This problem may occur when you make a virtual private network (VPN) connection on your Windows 2000-based computer, and the VPN server assigns a 0.0.0.0 subnet mask in the TCP/IP settings.
RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.
