SYMPTOMS

Software clients that use OLE to programmatically open Microsoft Word 97 and Word 2000 documents in Microsoft Word 2002 (Microsoft Office XP) may receive the following error message when the IOleObject::DoVerb function is called to show the document:

HRESULT Error: 0x80010105 (-2147417851)
RPC_E_SERVERFAULT
The server threw an exception.

The problem only occurs if the document has embedded links to other OLE servers, and the client runs Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me). Clients that run Windows XP do not see the error. The problem does not occur if the file is previously saved by Word 2002.

CAUSE

If a Word 97 or a Word 2000 document is opened by OLE (instead of by Automation or by a user), Word 2002 may cause an exception when it reads the link information data for the embedded links. This is caught by the remote procedure call (RPC) layer and then is returned to the calling client as the previous error code.
