SYMPTOMS

When you try to back up or restore multiple Exchange 2000 applications (for example, the information store and the Site Replication Service) simultaneously, the backup or restoration may stop responding. This problem may occur if you use a backup or restoration program with multiple threads on an Exchange 2000 server that Microsoft Exchange Site Replication is installed on.

CAUSE

The Exchange 2000 backup application programming interface (API) uses mutexes to control access to shared memory across multiple threads and processes. This problem may occur if the mutex name that is generated is not unique. Both threads try to access the same mutex simultaneously.

RESOLUTION

Cumulative Patch Information

To resolve this problem, obtain the March 2003 Exchange 2000 Server Post-Service Pack 3 (SP3) Rollup. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, perform simultaneous backup and restoration operations from separate processes instead.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.

MORE INFORMATION

After you apply this fix, the Exchange 2000 backup API includes the store type as part of the mutex name to make sure that different store types use different mutexes.
