SYMPTOMS

When you try to create an offline address book (OAB), you may receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:

An error occurred while generating the offline Address Book. To view details, see the application event log in the Windows NT Event Viewer on the offline Address Book Server. Microsoft Exchange Administrator ID no. c1031662

You may also receive the following event in the Application log of the Event Viewer:

Source: MSExchangeSA

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the OAB folder is improperly homed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, rehome the OAB folder so you can successfully create new offline address books. To do this, follow these steps from the site that is experiencing OAB problems:

WARNING: If you use the raw mode of the Exchange Server Administrator program (admin /r) incorrectly, serious problems may occur that may require you to reinstall Microsoft Windows NT Server, Microsoft Exchange Server, or both. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that result from using raw mode incorrectly can be solved. Use raw mode at your own risk.

Replicate the OAB

  1. On the Exchange 5.5 Server-based computer, start the Exchange Administrator in Raw mode. To do this, click Start, click Run, type drive:\exchsrvr\bin\admin.exe /r in the Open box, and then press ENTER, where drive is the drive on which Exchange is installed.
  2. Double-click Folders, and then double-click System Folders.
  3. Double-click OFFLINE ADDRESS BOOK, and then click the offline address book.
  4. In the right pane, click OAB Version 2, and then click Properties.

NOTE: In some cases OAB Version 2 may not appear in the site folder hierarchy. To make OAB Version 2 appear in the site folder hierarchy:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click Microsoft Exchange Administrator.
    2. In the left pane, double-click the site, and then double-click Configuration.
    3. In the right pane, click DS Site Configuration, and then click Properties.
    4. Click the Offline Address Book tab, click to clear the Microsoft Exchange 4.0 and 5.0 Compatibility check box, and then click Apply.
    5. Click to select the Microsoft Exchange 4.0 and 5.0 Compatibility check box, click Apply, and then click OK.
  5. Click Replicas.
  6. Under Servers, click the server that on which the OAB resides, and then type the name of a server in the site that is experiencing OAB problems in the Replicate folders to list.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Wait for replication to occur.

Change the Home Server

  1. After replication has completed, start the Exchange Administrator in Raw mode. To do this, click Start, click Run, type drive:\exchsrvr\bin\admin.exe /r in the Open box, and then press ENTER, where drive is the drive on which Exchange is installed.
  2. On the View menu, click Raw Directory.
  3. Double-click Folders, and then double-click System Folders.
  4. Double-click OFFLINE ADDRESS BOOK, and then click the offline address book.
  5. In the right pane, click OAB Version 2, and then click Properties.
  6. Click Advanced.
  7. Under Home server, click a server in the site that is experiencing OAB problems, and then click OK.
  8. Wait for the change to propagate. After the change has propagated, the OAB Version 2 has been rehomed.

Remove the Replica OAB

You can now remove the OAB Version 2 replica on the original server:

  2. On the View menu, click Raw Directory.
  3. Double-click Folders, and then double-click System Folders.
  4. Double-click OFFLINE ADDRESS BOOK, and then click the offline address book.
  5. In the right pane, click OAB Version 2, and then click Properties.
  6. Click Replicas.
  7. Under the Replicate folders to list, click the server that will no longer store the OAB, click Remove, and then click OK.
  8. Wait for replication to occur.
