SYMPTOMS

When you log on by using the Security Accounts Manager (SAM) name, the logon attempt succeeds. The logon attempt does not succeed when the user part of the user principal name (UPN) is longer than 20 characters or is different from the SAM account user name.

The SAM account uses the following format:

Domain\SAMaccountUserName

The UPN uses the following format:

UserName@DomainFQDN

Note FQDN is the fully qualified domain name.

In Microsoft Windows 2000, any UPN that is explicitly used and that has the following characteristics does not typically pass authentication:

  • The UPN is different from the SAM account user name.
  • The UPN contains a user part that is longer than 20 characters.
