SYMPTOMS
In Reader 2.0, when you try to open a copyrighted e-book that you purchased a license for, you cannot view the e-book. This problem may occur after you upgrade Reader from an earlier version.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, follow these steps in the order in which they are presented.
NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
If you have not yet activated Reader, then you must activate it before you can open encrypted e-books:
- Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
- Click Activate now!, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
If you have activated Reader, did you use the same Passport Network account that you used when you purchased the e-books? If you did not use the same account, then you must reactivate:
- Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
- Click Activate now!, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
- When you are prompted for the Passport Network account to activate, use the same account that you used to purchased the e-books.
If activating or reactivating does not solve the problem, try the following steps:
Step 1: Remove Reader
- Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
- Click Change or Remove Programs, click Microsoft Reader 2.0 in the list of installed programs, and then click Remove.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the program.
Step 2: Remove the Associated Files
- Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
- Locate the following folder
drive
:\Program Files\Microsoft Reader - If the folder is present, right-click it, and then click Delete.
- Close Windows Explorer.
- Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
- Click your system disk (typically, [C:]), and then click OK.
NOTE: If you are not sure which disk to clean, you can repeat Disk Cleanup for each disk on your computer. - Under Files to delete, click to select the Temporary Internet Files check box and the Temporary files check box, click OK, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion.

Step 3: Rename Files
- Click Start, click Search, and then click All files and folders.
- In the All or part of the file name box, type dasctrl.dll.
- In the Look in box, click Local Hard Drives, and then click Search.
- When the search is complete, right-click any files that were found, and then click Rename.
- Rename the files as Dasctrl.old.
- Repeat these steps for the following files:
- Dasact.dll
- Ctras.dll
- Litpath.lpt
Rename each file using the .old file name extension.
- Locate and open the following folder
drive
:Documents and Settings\User_Name
\My Documents\My Library\drive
is the letter of your system drive, andUser_Name
is the name of the user account. This path assumes a default installation and may vary on your computer. - Right-click the .lit file that corresponds to the e-book that you want to open, and then click Rename.
- Rename the
File_name
.lit file toFile_name
.old. - Locate and open the following folder
drive
:Documents and Settings\User_Name
\My Documents\My Library\Annotationsdrive
is the letter of your system drive, andUser_Name
is the name of the user account. This path assumes a default installation and may vary on your computer. - Right-click the .ebo file that corresponds to the e-book that you want to open, and then click Rename.
- Rename the
File_name
.ebo file asFile_name
.old.
Step 3: Reinstall Microsoft Reader
Rerun the setup program from which you installed Microsoft Reader. If you cannot locate your Reader setup program, you can download it by visiting the following Microsoft Web site:

Step 4: Reactivate the Reader
- Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
- Log on using your Passport Network sign-in name.
- Click Activate.
Step 5: Test the Results
Open the e-book that you were previously unable to view
