Session Summary


This session will talk about what the Profiler is, and then when, why, and how you should use. We will go into the details of various Profiler components and discuss their applicability to specific troubleshooting scenarios (with examples). We will also discuss the underlying extended stored procedures and how to use them outside of the GUI. In addition, we will look into the way Profiler works with other tools such as the Index Tuning Wizard. Finally, we will discuss common issues surrounding Profiler, and provide some simple tricks and shortcuts.

This is a Level 200 session that was recorded May 18, 2000, and is presented by Sri Kasam and Ajay Manchepalli.

Sri Kasam joined Microsoft in February 1999 as a SQL Server Support Professional and has about three years of database development and administration experience. He has a Masters in Computer Science and is an MCSE. Sri Kasam currently works for Product Support Services primarily focusing on SQL Server 7.0.

Ajay Manchepalli has been with Microsoft SQL Support for two years and is currently in the role of Technical Lead. He has a Masters degree in Computer Science and is an MCSE. He was with Compaq Computer Corporation for two years as a Database Performance Engineer, and was involved in publishing TPC benchmarks. His background and specialization are in the areas of performance and tuning.
