Session Summary

During this presentation, we will talk about one of the new features introduced in Microsoft SQL Server 2000, INSTEAD OF triggers. In SQL Server version 7.0 and earlier, triggers are implemented in a before fashion. In other words, any constraint checks are performed after the insert is attempted. The INSTEAD OF trigger functionality performs the actions specified in the definition of the trigger. We will also discuss, and provide examples of, some of the main applications of INSTEAD OF triggers, including implementing cascading referential integrity and inheritance. We will talk about performance of INSTEAD OF triggers and metadata considerations. Finally, we will explain some of the restrictions and caveats to heed when using this feature.

This is a Level 200 session that was recorded Tuesday, January 16, 2001: 10:00 A.M. Pacific time (Greenwich mean time - 8 hours) and presented by Dinesh Murthy. Dinesh Murthy works as a developer support professional in the SQL Server Database Development team. His primary responsibilities include database performance tuning and concurrency control in high-end SQL Server systems implemented around the globe. Dinesh has a Master's degree in Computer Science.
