SYMPTOMS

Office XP

When you start or quit one of the Office XP programs listed at the beginning of this article, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

Microsoft program name has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

To see what data this error report contains, click here.

where program name is the Office XP program that you were working with when the error occurred.

When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature similar to the error listed at the beginning of this article.

Office 2000

When you start or quit one of the Office 2000 programs listed at the beginning of this article, the application may stop responding.

CAUSE

This behavior is caused by an incompatibility with the PDFMaker.dot, PDFMaker.xla, or PDFMaker.ppa add-in that is included and installed with Adobe Acrobat 5.0.

RESOLUTION

An update is available from Adobe that fixes this issue. For more information about this resolution, visit the following Adobe Systems, Inc. Web site:

NOTE: If you also have Norton Anti-Virus or Norton SystemWorks installed on your machine, please see the following Service and Support document from Symantec Corporation about issues that might occur if you have the Norton Anti-Virus Plug-In for Microsoft Office enabled when using the PDFMaker add-ins.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, rename the PDFMaker file, and then move it to your desktop. See the following table to find the file name that is associated with each Microsoft Office program:

File name Rename file to
PDFMaker.dot PDFMakerWD.bak
PDFMaker.xla PDFMakerXL.bak
PDFMaker.ppa PDFMakerPPT.bak





Look for these files in the following Office XP folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Startup


or, the following Office 2000 folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup


or, in one of the following program folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup


C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART


and in this folder:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat5.0\PDFMaker
