SYMPTOMS
If you use Windows Explorer on a Windows XP-based client computer to perform a search for files or folders on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server, or Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, the connection to the files may appear as being left open on the target computer. This issue occurs if you search by using the A word or phrase in the file search option.
If you view the open file connections on the server, the files may correspond to .xls files, some types of CAD files, or both. The files stay open until you log off.
CAUSE
The Microsoft Office Indexing filter (Offfilt.dll) may leak file handles when you search from the shell. Offfilt.dll is used to index Microsoft Office files.
RESOLUTION

The English version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows XP Service Pack 1.
