Note Microsoft .NET Passport is now Windows Live ID. However, older versions of Microsoft Money may still refer to Windows Live ID as one of the following:

  • Passport
  • .NET Passport
  • The Passport Network

This step-by-step article describes how to change the e-mail address that you use to sign in to your Microsoft Money data file or the MSN Money Web site. Therefore, you can continue to access the same information that was associated with your original sign in information. If you only want to remove the Windows Live ID that is associated to your Money data file, go to step 5.

Step 1: Determine what type of e-mail addresses are currently being used and will be used as your Windows Live ID

When your e-mail address is managed by Microsoft directly, this is known as a Reserved Domain ID.

For example, a Reserved Domain ID e-mail address ends in hotmail.com, msn.com, or webtv.com.

If your e-mail address is managed by some other company, your corresponding Windows Live ID is not directly linked to your e-mail service itself. So, if change your password for that e-mail address at that other company, it would not change the password of the corresponding Windows Live ID because they are not directly linked. This is known as an Email-As-Sign-In ID with a Reserved Domain sign in e-mail address. Other data is associated to this sign in e-mail address, such as your actual e-mail address. This makes it a bit more difficult to change this kind of Windows Live ID in Money. You can change the sign in e-mail address that you use for your Microsoft Money or MSN Money Deluxe Portfolio but you have to re-create any other data that is associated to your original sign in e-mail address.

Step 2: Determine the type of data that is associated with your Windows Live ID

If you are using Microsoft Money or the MSN Money Deluxe Portfolio, there is a data file that is stored on the computer that is locked with your sign in e-mail address. If that is the case, open that file in Microsoft Money to change or remove the Windows Live ID.

To find the location and the name of the local MSN Money Portfolio file, follow these steps:

  1. Start Portfolio Manager.
  2. In the Other Tasks section, click More, and then click About Portfolio Manager.
  3. Record the path and the name of the file.

If you are not using Money or the MSN Money Deluxe Portfolio, and you want to change the e-mail address that is associated to other data that you use on MSN Money, go to Step 5.

Step 3: Use Microsoft Money 2006 to access your MSN Money Portfolio data file

Because the MSN Money Deluxe Portfolio is based on Microsoft Money 2006, you have to use Money 2006 to change the sign in e-mail address for your MSN Money Portfolio data. If you have Money 2006 installed, start Money 2006. If you do not have Money 2006, download the trial version. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Note The MSN Money Portfolio is incompatible with Microsoft Money 2007.

Step 4: Remove and Change the Windows Live ID that you use to access your Microsoft Money or MSN Money Portfolio data file

Generally, with Money data files you have to remove the old Windows Live ID from the data file, create a new Windows Live ID, and then associate it to the data file.

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. If you are using the MSN Money Portfolio, in Money 2006, click File, click Open, and then find the file that you identified in the "Step 2 Determine the type of data that is associated with your Windows Live ID" section. If you are using Money, Money will open the last file that you used. If you do not want to change the Windows Live ID for this file, click File, click Open, and then find and open the file that you want to change.
  2. Sign in by using your original Windows Live ID credentials.
  3. On the File menu in Money, click Password Manager.
  4. Remove the existing Windows Live ID. Follow the steps that appear on the screen. If you want to remove the data on the MSN Money servers that is linked to this old Windows Live ID, select the option to do this.

Note If you only want to remove the Windows Live ID from your Money file, you can stop here.

  1. After you remove the existing Windows Live ID, click Password Manager on the File menu, and then add your new Windows Live ID credentials.
  2. Enable MSN Money access. To do this, click Access Money on the web on the Tools menu.

Note You must complete steps 5 and 6 if you want to access your Portfolio data by using the MSN Money Portfolio with your new Windows Live ID.

Step 5: Change the e-mail address that you use to sign in if your Windows Live ID is not in a reserved domain

Note If you have already created a new Windows Live ID, close it or use a different e-mail address. For more information, visit the following Web site:

To change your Windows Live ID profile and to change the e-mail address that you use to sign in, follow these steps:

  3. Click Sign In.
  4. Near the top of the page, click the Change link that appears next to your current sign-in e-mail address.
  5. In the Change Your Windows Live ID section, select the type of new sign in e-mail address that you want.
  6. In the New E-mail Address box, type the e-mail address that you want.
